All P042X codes (where 'X' can be any number) refer to the catalytic converter and exhaust system. P0420 refers to the catalytic converter or - more specifically - the oxygen (O2) sensors before and after it on the bank 1 side of the exhaust system.

On most vehicles, there is an O2 sensor both in front (upstream) and behind (downstream) the catalytic converter. Normally, these two O2 sensors will have different readings when the car is running. The upstream sensor should have a fluctuating oxygen level, dependent on the amount of exhaust being created and the engine's fuel consumption rate.

As the exhaust gases enter the catalytic converter, they should be 'scrubbed' (or converted). When these gases are read by the second (downstream) O2 sensor, oxygen readings should be relatively steady. Thus, when your vehicle is functioning properly, the reading from the first O2 sensor to the second should be quite different.

However, if the readings taken by the O2 sensors before and after the catalytic converter are the same (or very similar), the P0420 code will trip.

Most of the time, a similar reading means that the catalytic converter is not working as efficiently as it should be. However, this trouble code can also trigger when things upstream are not doing well. As a general rule, if your engine trips a P0420 code along with other upstream trouble codes, the problem you're having likely isn't related to the catalytic converter.

May 08, 2019  The first generation #Raptor had all the necessary trimmings for a factory tuned off-road truck and while it was mostly an experiment for #Ford, it became a huge success which is why a new version. So far the details are still scarce but it looks like. Ford raptor 2019 price.

However, if the P0420 code is the only trouble code - or if the other codes are all P042X codes - the likelihood of a failed catalytic converter is much higher.

Several things can cause a P0420 code in a Toyota:

  1. Leaded fuel in an unleaded system will nearly always trigger this, given the differing properties of leaded fuel combustion and exhaust.
  2. Failed O2 sensors or connections are also possible culprits.
  3. A failed catalytic converter.
  4. Other less likely problems: an issue with the coolant temperature sensor, an exhaust manifold leak, a spark timing issue, leaking fuel injectors, misfires, or fuel oil contamination.

Because there are a lot of possible problems that could cause a PO420 code, it's a good idea to check the (far cheaper) oxygen sensors and other items before you invest in a new catalytic converter.

While your vehicle identification number (VIN) isn’t the secret key to an amazing array of data, it can be used to figure out the year, make, model, trim package, engine size, and transmission type of any vehicle. If you’d like to decode your VIN, here’s a basic guide.

Check out our free VIN number decoder here: http://parts.olathetoyota.com/vin-decoder×

First, you need the number. Your Toyota’s VIN is 17 digits, and it’s printed in a few different locations:

  1. Either on a sticker or a metal tag located on your dashboard. You should be able to see it through the windshield on the driver’s side, way down at the bottom.
  2. On a sticker inside the driver’s door jamb.
  3. On a sticker under the hood (actually stuck to the underside of the hood).

You can also find the VIN etched on your vehicle’s window glass (something a lot of vehicles have), under the spare tire, printed on the engine block, or even stamped in the metal above the vehicle’s rear wheel (driver’s side). Last (but not least), your insurance card and/or vehicle registration will have your VIN as well.

The first three digits in the VIN correspond to the make, model, and manufacturer.

The fourth digit represents the safety features on the vehicle.

Digits five thru eight represent the vehicle trim level or series, engine, and frequently (but not always) transmission.

The ninth digit is a little like those magnetic strips in paper money: it’s a “check digit” designed to verify the authenticity of the VIN. It’s determined using a mathematical formula that involves the other numbers in the VIN.

Digit 10 represents the year that your particular model of Toyota was introduced, while the eleventh number is a way to determine which factory assembled your vehicle.

Finally, the last six digits numbers used by Toyota to identify the vehicle internally. While these digits are often assumed to indicate when a vehicle was produced (i.e. 000001 would be the first car produced, 000002 would be the second), this is not always the case.

For the 10th digit, these are the model years corresponding to the year of production:

  • A – 1980 OR 2010
  • B – 1981 OR 2011
  • C – 1982 OR 2012
  • D – 1983 OR 2013
