Toyota Supra Manual Vs Auto Sale Numbers Mkiv

11/19/2019

Mar 24, 2018  Unfortunately for some car enthusiasts, sources claim that engine won’t come with a manual transmission. Apparently, Toyota believes perspective. The Toyota Supra (Japanese: トヨタ・スープラ, Toyota Sūpura) is a sports car and grand tourer manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation beginning in 1978. The initial four generations of the Supra were produced from 1978 to 2002. The fifth generation has been produced since March 2019 and went on sale in May 2019.

Auto vs. Manual

Automatic Supra For Sale

Q. Should I buy an auto or manual Supra?

A. This tends to be quite a hard question to answer due to the fact that both boxes are so well engineered and also the fact that the answer tends to be down to personal preference and what type of driving you intend using your Supra for.

There are pro’s and con’s to both boxes and hopefully by reading the info below you will be armed with enough facts to make a well educated decision, but you really must try out both boxes on similar types of car (i.e. stock or similar mods,) before making your decision.

Whichever you choose it is generally agreed you will not be disappointed.

V160 6 Speed Getrag Manual Gearbox

The much sought after manual gearbox found in the MKIV Supra. This box is supplied to Toyota (and various other vehicle manufacturers) by German manufacturer Getrag and was one of the first six speed boxes available on a road car.

This box has a reputation for being slightly agricultural when selecting gears and on occasions can be quite noisy in operation. Generally there is nothing wrong with the box; it is in fact a very strong box as far as manual gearboxes go.

When driving a six speed Supra the pick up tends to be slightly quicker than an equivalent auto car, until the first gear change. At which point you really need to be slick with gear changes to make the best of the box. Yes a manual Supra usually has faster 0-60 times than an auto but these tend to be achieved by professional test drivers who are a lot quicker at changing gear than your average driver.

Six speeds can be a bit tiresome if you are often driving in traffic jams but once you hit the country lanes the box comes into it’s own. The hydraulically assisted clutch is fine for general use but in slow moving traffic can start to feel heavy.

As for servicing and supporting any modifications to your car the six speed is well placed to support you for years to come. It is generally accepted that the six speed box will handle up to about 550Bhp by just using an uprated clutch. However if the box does fail on you then it could be an expensive trip to your Toyota dealer as there is no aftermarket servicing at all on these boxes and the only option is a new unit, which is approximately £3-4k.

We also add a 1-year 24-hour Roadside Assistance Plan (from original date of TCUV purchase). 2005 toyota corolla repair manual download free. So in summary the V160 box is a very capable and strong unit with great potential for those intending to race or modify their cars, but for day to day driving may not be best suited to your requirements. On the downside if the box does fail at anytime you could be left with a very expensive repair bill for a replacement unit.

A343E 4 Speed Automatic Gearbox

Fitted to many Supra’s and as standard to ALL right hand drive targa top Supra’s. This is a very capable automatic box, in that it can provide effortless day to day driving but when called on to provide a bit more oomph or control over gear selection can be very rewarding. This box is very much integrated into the rest of the car, for example when the box is changing gear the car’s ECU will restrict the throttle and retard the engines timing to momentarily reduce engine output so as to pro-long the life of the auto box and drive train.

This is a derivative of the A340 box seen in the MKIII Supra and as such any design issues tend to have been ironed out long ago and there is a certain amount of knowledge about the operation of the box within service establishments. The A343E box has a revised manual mode which holds the car in the gear selected and will not change down or up regardless of engine speed, thus it is more like a manual box.

In manual mode you will be able to select the first three gears by shifting the lever backwards and forwards, which gives you a little more control over the cars performance and also gear changes occur quicker than in auto mode. You can also use the lever selection (whether in manual mode or not) to perform engine braking if the need arises.

There is an overdrive button on the gear selector which when pushed in allows the car to cruise in overdrive mode and hence improves economy. But if you disable the overdrive (will be indicated by a light in the dash) then the car is allowed to rev further before the box changes up a gear.

There is one further button near the gear selector, that is for use in emergencies. Coloured red and usually labelled by some Japanese text this button will allow you to move the gear selector out of park without turning on the ignition or having your foot on the brake.

Like the manual box, the auto unit has a good reputation for strength and reliability and can support an increase in engine power up to approximately 500Bhp. After this stage you need to consider having the box rebuilt with uprated internals or accept the fact that the boxes’ service life may become shortened. A common upgrade, for those who enjoy drag racing, is to replace the torque converter with a higher stall item, therefore allowing higher revs before pulling away from the line and in turn the turbo’s will be producing boost quicker.

To conclude the A343E is a well-established box with a good reputation and is certainly a joy to drive in all types of traffic. It has also been proven to be more than capable in manual mode by owners who have raced their Supra’s. If you wish to upgrade your Supra to serious power then you will need to budget for the auto box to be rebuilt as and when the time comes.

Tiptronic gearbox

Not sure of the designation of this box but it sits in between the auto and the manual allowing you to change gears by use of buttons on the steering wheel. It is only available on later cars, 97 onwards.
